The musical explores the five-year relationship between Jamie Wellerstein, an aspiring writer, and Cathy Hiatt, an aspiring actress. The unique aspect of this musical is its non-linear narrative, as it tells the story of their relationship from two different perspectives:
The musical explores the joys and struggles of love, the challenges of pursuing individual dreams, and the complexities of maintaining a relationship over time. The emotional impact of the story is intensified by the contrasting perspectives of the characters.
Bret Fox (Jamie Wellerstein) is ecstatic to be back at STIE in this exciting premiere production! He was last seen here as Rudolph Peterson in this past spring’s reading of Judgement At Nuremberg. Since the age of four, Bret has been a performer both locally throughout Westchester and professionally, getting his start with commercials and as the Child Swing in A Christmas Carol at Madison Square Garden. He then went on to originate the role of Nathan Lukowski in the first and second national tours of The Full Monty. In addition to numerous television and film credits, Bret has also been featured in various parades and shows at Walt Disney World and Universal Studios. His favorite onstage appearances include Baby (Danny), The Full Monty (Ethan), A Chorus Line (Mike), Ragtime (Younger Brother), ...Shakespeare, Abridged, Spamalot (Sir Robin), tick, tick... BOOM! (Jon) and Spring Awakening (Moritz.) When not performing, Bret is a full-time Program Director for Random Farms Kids’ Theater.
Bret and Alea have wanted to do this show since they met each other 5 years ago. This show is about a couple and their 5-year relationship, and it is fitting that their friendship would culminate in this production in its 5th year. Bret and Alea are immensely grateful to Mara and Jeremy and everyone at Studio Theater In Exile for making their dream a reality!
Alea Vorillas (Cathy Hiatt) is thrilled to make her debut with the Studio Theater In Exile! She was most recently seen in the Catskills this past summer as Nancy in Oliver!, a role she reprised after performing it in NYC. She has been seen across the tri-state area in Evita (Eva Peron), West Side Story (Maria), Godspell (Lindsay), James and the Giant Peach (Spiker), Mamma Mia! (Tanya), Jesus Christ Superstar (Mary Magdalene), The Threepenny Opera (Jenny Diver), Candide (Cunegonde), Anything Goes (Hope Harcourt), The Fantasticks (Luisa) and Gypsy (Dainty June). Although an avid performer of musical theater, her roots are in opera. She has performed over 30 leading roles both regionally and in NYC including all three Mozart/Da Ponte ingenues – Susanna, Despina and Zerlina, all three heroines in Les Contes D’hoffman, Pamina (Die Zauberflote), Norina (Don Pasquale), Mimi and Musetta (La Boheme), Isabella in the American Premiere of I Due Figaro, and many others.

David and his partner, Megan Marod, also co-create and produce the successful NYC tourism and culture social media project The Megan Daily, which highlights some of NYC’s best attractions and most fascinating historical trivia and history. David is thrilled to be doing The Last Five Years with Bret and Alea. It’s a show he’s had on his “bucket list” for YEARS, and working with these two actors is a DREAM.
The Last Five Years is one of David’s favorite shows, probably because it’s a kind of intense storytelling that makes the audience feel, but also THINK about their own role in similar events in their own lives, and maybe even use it for deeper understanding of themselves AND others.
